The most prominent feature of the Monastery of Saint Simeon is that it is carved into the rocks of Mount Mokattam.

And the personality of Saint Simeon, whose name is given to the ancient monastery, is a good Christian man. He was called the tanner because he worked as a shoemaker and tanner. He is one of the saints in the Coptic Orthodox Church.

The idea of building the monastery came after the discovery of the cave in which Saint Simeon the tanner was buried by chance in February

In the early nineties of the last century, a mission of Coptic priests and archaeologists searched for the belongings of Simon al-Dabbagh, and they were able to find what was suspected to be his skeleton in August 1991 AD. Coptic scholars have suggested that it belonged to Simon al-Kharraz, and that it was the same vessel with which he was transporting water to the homes of the poor, and this vessel is still present in the monastery of St. Simon al-Dabbagh in Mokattam, Cairo.

The monastery was built with the help of the sons of the “Zabbaleen neighborhood” in Mokattam, who have lived in this neighborhood with their families since 1969 AD and according to the design assigned to the cave, which was developed by a distinguished architect, where they moved approximately two and a half million stones needed for construction, and it continued Completion of the construction of the monastery until it became in its current form.

The monastery of Anba Semaan El Kharraz consists of four churches: “The Cathedral of the Virgin and Saint Simeon El Kharraz, the Church of Anba Abram Ibn Zara’a the Syriac, the Church of St. Mark and the Hall of St. Simon El Kharraz, which can accommodate two thousand people, and the Church of Anba Paula, the first tourist.”
